Golden Citrus Sugar Cookies

orange golden citrus sugar cookies

Golden Citrus Sugar Cookies are a delectable twist on the classic sugar cookie, bursting with bright flavors and wholesome ingredients. Using Deep Roots Milling Stoneground flour adds a rustic, nutty depth, while orange zest infuses every bite with a vibrant citrus punch. Enhanced with a touch of honey and the warmth of nutmeg, these cookies deliver a flavor profile that's richer and more nuanced than your average sugar cookie.

In this recipe, you can use either silver all purpose flour or silver pastry flour. We recommend using pastry flour which results in a more tender and delicate texture.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all purpose flour or silver pastry flour (preferably stoneground)

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • 1 1/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks, room temperature)

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tablespoon honey

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • the zest of 1/2 an orange

for the cinnamon sugar:

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Directions

  1. In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, use either a hand mixer or a stand mixer to cream the butter, sugar, and orange zest on medium speed. Next add the eggs, vanilla, and honey until fully incorporated.

  3. Add the dry ingredients to the wet, slowly, while mixing. Wrap the cookie dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to overnight.

  4. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Form heaping tablespoons of dough into balls and drop into the cinnamon sugar mixture. Once completely covered, place the dough balls onto the cookie sheet, and press down gently with the back of a measuring cup to flatten.

  5. Bake for 9-11 minutes until the edges and bottoms start to turn golden. Let cool on the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack. The cookies will be very soft when they come out of the oven but will set up as they cool.
